Zimbabwe seeks BRICS membership; awaits response

Zimbabwean authorities have officially applied for BRICS membership as part of efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and enhance the country’s economic standing.

The Southern African nation now joins a growing list of countries awaiting a response from BRICS regarding their acceptance into the multinational bloc.

The announcement was made by Zimbabwe’s Foreign Minister, Amon Murwira, during a news conference in Moscow. Murwira, alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, expressed Zimbabwe’s commitment to meeting BRICS’ membership requirements.

“BRICS is one of the most important platforms for economic cooperation that is based on principles of mutual respect and sovereign equality of nations,” Murwira stated. “Zimbabwe would benefit from any system that respects these key principles of human interaction and human progress, and BRICS is one of them.”

He further emphasized that Zimbabwe is on a steady course to ensure all membership requirements are met as they await a response from the group based on internal consensus.

The BRICS bloc—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—continues to expand its influence, with several nations expressing interest in joining.

Zimbabwe employs this strategic move to strengthen economic ties and global partnerships within the alliance.
