Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has warned the Electoral Commission over its decision to limit access for media at the collation centres for the 2024 elections.
The Electoral Commission on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, announced through its Deputy Chair Dr. Bossman Asare that constituency and regional collation centres will be limited to only 8 and 12 media houses respectively.
Reacting to the announcement, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor said the EC shouldn’t start what they cannot defend because they don’t have the power to restrict media coverage of the elections.
“The EC has no power to limit or prevent any media house from covering a public event or activity. Article 162(1) guarantees the freedom & independence of the Media in this country.”
“There is no provision in CI 127 that mandates the EC to limit media coverage of Public Elections to only a select few media outlets,” part of Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor’s statement on X read.
He also asked the EC what criteria they will use to select the 8 and 12 media stations who will be accredited at the constituency and regional collation centres.
“Finally, which criteria will guide the EC to select the so-called 8 media stations? EC pls don’t start something you can’t defend in law,” he wrote.
