Former Barcelona star Memphis Depay has voiced his disappointment after witnessing the substandard condition of the training pitch being used by Asante Kotoko during a surprise visit on Boxing Day.
Depay, a Dutch international with Ghanaian roots, was visibly concerned about the state of the playing surface, which he deemed unsuitable for professional football. Addressing the team, he acknowledged their perseverance and pledged to support efforts to improve their facilities.
“You guys train on these types of pitches, and I respect that. It’s not easy. The ball bounces too much, so it takes more time to control,” Depay remarked, expressing his admiration for the players’ determination despite the challenges.
He added, “But how can we resolve it? I’m brainstorming with everyone behind the scenes now that I’ve shown my face here, and I’ll do my best to help bring about change.”
Depay’s connection to Asante Kotoko runs deeper than this visit. On a previous trip to Ghana, he had the opportunity to meet the club’s owner, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, further solidifying his ties to the historic club.
