The excitement and anticipation for a second edition since last year’s unforgettable turnout of the maiden edition of YFM’s ‘Clash of the DJs’ could simply not be overlooked; hence the DJ battle is officially here again.
The country’s biggest Disc Jockey battle will have DJs from the undefeated urban radio entertainment channels Y107.9FM Accra, Y102.5FM Kumasi and Y97.9FM Takoradi vibrating the Earth’s crust with their dope song mixes carefully selected across all musical genres.
On the 6th of March, 2021, Y97.9FM Takoradi’s Hot Squad, will battle for the title of ultimate champions with the best mixes from Reggae/Dancehall to Made in Ghana, HipHop, Afrobeats, Back in the Day (throwback) and Freestyles all within a given period of time.
With pros like DJ Edita, DJ Gunshot and DJ Suraka backed by their hype man extraordinaire TJDJ, the Hot Squad of YFM Takoradi is positive that they will be taking the crown from YFM Accra this year.
DJ Edita, known personally as Richard Yeboah, found his love for DJing during his Junior High School days and upon realizing his potential, he joined a mobile disc jockeying company (CHORUS SOUNDS LIMITED) whiles in Senior High School.
Although he had limited access to the company’s equipment, the determined young DJ still managed to learn a lot with what was at his disposal and that laid the foundation for what later become his profession. DJ Edita joined YFM in 2015 after winning the maiden edition of the Y’DISCOVERY competition organized by Y 97.9FM. He was later added to the YCE show production team and also doubled as the stand-in disc jockey of the show.
The Takoradi Technical University graduate became the official DJ of the YCE show in 2016 and in 2017, DJ Edita was invited to be the Official DJ at Miss TTU. The award-winning DJ is currently the official DJ for YFM Takoradi’s DRYVE ON Y with Nana Quasi-Wusu and the YCE show with Rahm Besia.
Eric Amegatse, popularly known DJ Gunshot is a beast on the turntables with 12 years experience in the showbiz industry. Since he joined Y97.9FM in 2013, he has worked hand-in-hand with his team to give YFM Takoradi recognition twice as the most listened to radio station in the oil city and number one on the Synovate report.
His radio journey started from Good News FM through to Help FM and then to Melody FM where he worked for 3 years each, before joining YFM in February 2013. DJ Edita, at YFM, started playing on the Afropolitan Mix and then continued to play on The Dryve with Ada, as well as on the Friday Nyt Mix. He became the DJ for Shouts on Y after programs were restructured in 2016 but currently, he is the official DJ for Ryse N Shyne with Chelsy Sey, and the Myd-Morning Radio Show which are now the two most listened to programmes on Y97.9FM in the oil city. He is also the official DJ for YFM’s Party Pressure and the official DJ for Malibu pub.
You can’t talk of DJs in the Oil City without mentioning DJ Suraka. Suraka Fuseni who identifies as DJ Suraka in the Showbiz world, realized his DJing capabilities in 1985 when he played his first gig at Jah Guide Studios inside Nima. He continued at Matador Night Club in Osu with Dj Wood Man in 1993, Club Felisa in Tema in 1994, Fridays Night Club in 2002, Pokonus Night Club at Tarkwa in 2016, and then was poached to Busua Beach Resort (Waves Night Club) in 2016.
While playing at night clubs, he doubled as a radio DJ at Sunshine Radio (now Choice FM) with KKD in 2002, moved to Adom FM in 2005 with Abeiku Santana on “Fie Kwanso”, Oman FM in 2007, Hitz FM (Multimedia) in 2012 and then finally joined YFM in June 2013 where he is exhibiting his prowess till date. He was the official DJ for the Y Lounge for 6 years until March 2019 when Suraka and his On-Air partner hopped on “Shouts On Y”. He also DJs on the weekend show “Boombox” every Saturday from 3pm to 6pm.
DJ Suraka has received countless accolades as a DJ like 1st Runner Up for the Nescafe Dj’s competition, nomination for Best Radio Dj Western Music Awards, Best Night Club Dj of the year at Club Felisa In 1996, and Best Night Club Dj at Fridays Night Club in 2003 and 2004.
It’s quite a task finding DJs that can be ambidextrous with the turntable but Hype man TJDJ, born Terrence John Akuaku Jnr is one out of the lot. Skilled as a radio host, hype man and DJ, TJDJ has always loved the feeling of getting people hyped by his playlists even at a younger age when he started with limited equipment. He started as a hype man in 2004 after completing high school and got introduced into disc jockeying in 2005 by his uncle Dj Ice. The multi-talent joined YFM in 2019 and has since received two nominations at the Ghana DJ Awards.
