It goes without saying that street lighting plays a very critical role in socioeconomic activity in every country.
Street lights can be used in promoting security in urban areas, and to increase the quality of life by artificially extending the hours in the night, for an activity to take place.
Unfortunately, as important as these roles are, too many of these street lights in our urban and
periurban areas are either malfunctioning or even stolen in some cases.
It is against this background that Kwame Afrifa-Mensah, the host of Happy FM’s ‘Epahoa Daben show’, has taken a swipe at the authorities in charge of street lights. He lamented that the same crane machines that city engineers use to fix the street lights, the “thieves” also use cranes to steal the bulbs, yet go unnoticed.
He decried the poor maintenance culture in this country where defective street lights are left to rot only to be “revived” in election seasons.
He, therefore, charged the Ministry of Roads and highways to rise up to the occasion, to ensure the effective functioning of our street lights, for their intended purposes.
