Frank Boahene, a consultant to the National Sports Authority (NSA) and Chief Executive Officer of Green Grass Technology has defended the move by the Sports Authority to close down the Accra Sports Stadium for maintenance works.
Boahene who is responsible for pitch maintenance at the Accra Sports Stadium told Happy Sports that the pitch is being overused with its state now being in a critical condition.
According to him, the pitch has become acidic which can be harmful to the players.
He also stated that the number of matches played at the venue so far this season has put the pitch in a deplorable state thus the need for urgent repairs.
“Six teams played at the Accra Sports Stadium which makes maintenance difficult. We have discovered that the quality of the pitch is not in good shape”, he told Odiasempa Kwame Oware on Wamputu Sports on Happy 98.9FM.
“We have played 40 games so far which ideally should be for a season but now we are playing more than 240 games on one pitch. Periodically we must fertilize the pitch every month. The pitch has turned acidic and we advised the Director-General to do the maintenance work. So we made the recommendations to the NSA”, he added.
The NSA has directed the Ghana Football Association to postpone league matches from December 13-26, 2021.
Four clubs using the venue Great Olympics, Hearts of Oak, Accra Lions and Legon Cities will be affected during the period.
