Vacant seats: I warned Speaker Mike Oquaye and Akufo-Addo in 2020 but they didn’t listen - Haruna Iddrisu

Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has blamed president Akufo-Addo and former Speaker Aaron Mike Oquaye for the current crisis in Parliament.

According to the Member of Parliament for Temale South, he warned the President and the Speaker to be careful about the precedent they were setting in 2020 by former Fomena MP Andrews Asiamah for going independent.

Haruna Iddrisu told journalists in Parliament on Thursday, November 7, 2024, that the “chaos” happening because of the declaration of four seats vacant is because of what happened four years ago.

“When I had the opportunity to lead the Minority in Parliament, I told the president Akufo-Addo and Speaker Mike Oquaye to be careful about the precedent they were setting by removing the Fomena MP from Parliament because he went Independent.”

“They didn’t listen to my caution four years ago and what we are seeing today is because of that precedent they set. So blame them,” Haruna Iddrisu said.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has adjourned Parliament indefinitely after the NPP caucus boycotted the recall.
