The Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris has promised a new era of cooperation with Africa, describing it as “a future that is propelled by African innovation.”
Delivering a public lecture to an audience of young people at the Black Star Square in Accra, on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, the USA vice president said. “What we can do with our African partners, not what we can do for our African partners,” should be the U.S.’s guiding principle.
“We must invest in the African ingenuity and creativity, which will unlock incredible economic growth and opportunities,” Harris said, highlighting the continent’s innovations to deliver emergency healthcare supplies and provide vaccines, and farming and mineral processing.
Vice President Harris also focused on key areas for improvement, such as advancing democracies globally, developing Africa’s digital economy, and empowering women.
“Women around the world must be able to fully participate in economic, political and social life, and they must be able to participate equally including in leadership roles,” she said. “The empowerment of women is rooted in the concept of freedom, not just freedom from violence or want, but freedom to create one’s own future.”
Harris will also visit the Cape Coast slave castle, which will include a tour and a set of remarks there.
She will, at the Cape Coast Castle, speak about the brutality of slavery and the African Diaspora.
