The Uruguayan Football Federation has honored striker Luis Suarez for years of dedicated service with the video of the infamous handball against Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Suarez announced his retirement from international football ahead of Uruguay’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Saturday, September 7, 2024.
Uruguay posted a video of Suarez’s ‘heroic’ act against the Black Stars of Ghana which aided their semi-final qualification at the 2010 FIFA World Cup with the caption “”Nothing will be the same without him.” The former Barcelona and Liverpool striker commented on the post with an emoji depicting a nostalgic feeling about the iconic moment.
Luis Suarez in 2010 was tagged Africa’s enemy number 1 after preventing John Mensah’s goal bound header with his hand resulting in a penalty which was missed by Asamoah Gyan. Uruguay went ahead to win the game on penalties thus preventing Ghana from becoming the first African country to qualify to the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup.
