The Ghana Police Service briefed the press on the ongoing issue between the service and democracy hub on an intended three (3) day picketing at the Revolution Square in front of the Jubilee House.
The Ghana Police service said, the service did not refuse the group’s request to provide security but raised concern about the venue.
The Police Service says, after conducting an assessment of the proposed picketing point and , “In line with the provisions of the Public Oder Act, 1994 (Act 491), the protests at the Revolution Square could affect public order, endanger public defence, public safety and public health.
“As a result, in the interest of public defence, public order, public safety and the running of essential services, the Police engaged the organizers and requested them to consider an alternative location for the picketing.”
According to them, the organizers refused to consider an alternative location and insisted on the Revolution Square, hence, compelling them to take the matter to court.
An Accra High Court, on Wednesday 18th September 2024, granted the Ghana Police Service an order to prohibit Democracy Hub from embarking on the demonstration at the Revolution Square from the 21st to 23rd September 2024.
