University of Ghana postpones 2024/2025 academic year amid ongoing strike

The University of Ghana has postponed the start of the 2024/2025 academic year due to an ongoing strike by several teacher unions.

This decision was announced by the University’s Registrar in a statement on September 25, 2024.

The statement noted that while the university has delayed the commencement of regular programmes, special programmes will continue as planned. The institution also noted that a new date for the beginning of the academic year will be announced later.

The strike, which has led to this postponement, involves multiple university worker unions, including the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical University Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG).

These unions are pressing the government to address issues such as vehicle maintenance and pension allowances. The teacher unions are also urging the government to fulfil their collective bargaining agreement by the end of September 2024.
