The University of Ghana is set to host its inaugural Community Games on November 16th, 2024 at the University’s Rugby field.
This exciting event, organized by the Sports and Wellness Directorate, aims to promote physical health, community spirit, and personal growth among its diverse community.
A Celebration of Health and Unity
The launch event, held on today at the University’s Rugby field, saw Dr. Austin Luguterah, the Director of Sports and Wellness, express his enthusiasm for the initiative.
“It is with immense joy and excitement that I welcome you to the inaugural University of Ghana Community Games. Today we gather not only to celebrate our shared passion for sports, but also to strengthen the bond of community and friendship that makes our university a truly unique and vibrant place.
He emphasized the importance of sports in fostering a healthy and active campus environment, stating, “The University of Ghana has always been a pioneer in promoting holistic development among its members, and these games are a testimony of our commitment to fostering a healthy, active, and engaging campus environment. Sports and physical activity plays a crucial role in enhancing our physical health, mental well-being, and social connection”.
The Community Games will feature a thrilling football tournament(30 minutes per game), with eight teams competing for the coveted championship title. The teams are divided into two groups:
Group A:
- Colleague of Health and Science
- Colleague of Basic and Applied Science
- The Union
- UG Enterprises
Group B:
- Colleague of Humanities
- Colleague of Education
- Central Administration
- UG Alumni
The top teams from each group will advance to the final match, where they will battle it out for the ultimate glory.
Beyond the Pitch
The Community Games extend beyond the football field, aiming to create a sense of belonging and foster social interaction. By encouraging participation from all members of the university community, the event seeks to strengthen bonds and promote inclusivity.
