Uganda’s Health Ministry has confirmed nine cases of Ebola following the declaration of an outbreak of the viral disease in late January.
The outbreak is attributed to the Sudan strain of the virus, for which there is no approved vaccine.
Initial reports revealed that three individuals were first infected, with an additional six cases later confirmed. The Health Ministry also announced the death of one individual.
A statement released late Monday indicated that seven patients are currently being treated in a hospital in Kampala, while one is receiving care in a hospital in Mbale, near the Kenyan border.
This marks Uganda’s sixth Ebola outbreak. Strong containment measures, including a WHO-backed trial vaccination program targeting the Sudan strain, are underway.
All eight surviving patients are reported to be in stable condition, with 265 of their contacts under quarantine.
