In response to the recent surge in violence between Israel and Hamas, the United States has announced its decision to bolster its military presence near Israel. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revealed that multiple military ships and aircraft will be deployed as a demonstration of support for Israel.

This move comes as Washington suspects that Hamas’ deadly attacks may be aimed at disrupting potential efforts to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Hamas fighters launched a rampage through Israeli towns, resulting in the bloodiest day in decades for the country. Israel responded with air strikes in Gaza, leading to hundreds of casualties on both sides and raising concerns about the possibility of a major conflict in the Middle East.

Tragically, at least three Americans were among those killed in the violence, according to CNN’s report. In response, Austin ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, comprising the carrier itself, a guided missile cruiser, and four guided missile destroyers, to move closer to Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The United States is augmenting its Air Force presence in the region by reinforcing F-35, F-15, F-16, and A-10 fighter aircraft squadrons. The U.S. will also provide amunitions to Israel as part of its ongoing support.

President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of additional assistance for the Israeli Defense Forces during their call. Vice President Kamala Harris also held discussions with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

The Pentagon issued a statement confirming Austin’s conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, emphasizing the United States’ unwavering support for Israel’s right to self-defense. These actions, the statement explained, are designed to strengthen the U.S. military presence in the region and enhance regional deterrence efforts.

While these developments unfolded, a few dozen pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in Times Square, New York City, and near the White House in Washington, expressing their opposition to the U.S.’ support for Israel. Some demonstrators carried banners with slogans such as “End U.S. aid” and “resistance is not terrorism.” New York Governor Kathy Hochul had previously criticized plans for such protests, condemning them as “morally repugnant.”

This recent escalation of violence initiated by Hamas is touted as the most significant and deadliest incursion into Israel since the Yom Kippur war 50 years ago when Egypt and Syria launched a sudden assault in an attempt to regain lost territory.
