The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) has distanced itself from members of the Kumasi Technical University who publicly opposed Organised Labour’s planned strike on October 10, 2024, against illegal mining.
On October 7, a faction within the Kumasi Technical University chapter of TUTAG expressed their disapproval of the strike, claiming there was insufficient consultation by Organised Labour before the industrial action was announced.
Organised Labour had previously declared its intention to embark on an indefinite strike after government failed to meet its demands to ban illegal mining, commonly referred to as “galamsey”.
Despite meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, where Organised Labour was urged to reconsider the strike, the group decided to proceed with their plans.
In a statement released on October 8, TUTAG called on its members to stay committed and follow the strike timelines, highlighting the need for solidarity in addressing the issue of illegal mining. The association also reiterated its support for the strike and rejected the opposing views from members of its Kumasi chapter.

Disclaimer Regarding Press Statement by Concerned Members of Organised Labour
The Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG) wishes to issue a disclaimer regarding the recent press statement released by some members of KsTU TUTAG claiming to be “Concerned Members of Organised Labour” concerning the proposed nationwide strike aimed at compelling the government to address the galamsey menace. We categorically state that this press statement does not represent the views of TUTAG or its leadership.
As we have clearly stated in our previous press release, the ongoing negative impact of galamsey on the environment, public health, and the future of our communities and nation is a matter of urgent national concern. This issue cannot be undermined or used to advance the selfish interests of any group or political party. TUTAG stands in full solidarity with Organised Labour in its efforts to highlight this critical issue and supports any lawful and constructive actions to resolve the galamsey crisis.
We wish to reassure our members that TUTAG remains fully committed to representing their interests in all matters, including the upcoming planned strike. As a member of Organised Labour, we are fully aligned with the broader objectives of safeguarding the environment and ensuring that the voices of the working class are heard and respected. We firmly believe that addressing the galamsey menace is a national priority, and TUTAG will stand resolutely with Organised Labour to achieve meaningful solutions for the future of our country.
Members are encouraged to remain calm, as an emergency Congress has been scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, October 9, 2024, to finalise the decision on the proposed industrial action by Organised Labour. TUTAG will continue to take all necessary actions to protect the interests of both our members and the nation as a whole.
Additionally, we urge the media to stop using misleading bar lines and banner headlines with TUTAG in them because the advocates are not the spokespersons of TUTAG.
