Traders at the Kumasi Central Market have issued an ultimatum, warning that they will occupy the unfinished market site with their merchandise and goods if the construction company fails to clear all barriers by May 19.
The project has been delayed for over 18 months due to renegotiation of a loan agreement, which was necessitated by Ghana’s decision to pursue a financial rescue package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This restructuring process has caused a significant setback, putting the project on hold for an extended period.
In a petition submitted on May 14, the traders expressed their discontent with the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, citing inaction and a lack of progress on the second phase of the Kumasi Central Market project, which has left them feeling neglected and frustrated.
The traders have vowed to intensify their protest with a five-day demonstration to push for the resumption of work on the project.
Additionally, they have issued a stern ultimatum to Contracta Construction Company Limited, demanding the removal of all barriers surrounding the project site within a week. Failure to comply will result in further action, as the traders are determined to see progress on the stalled project.
