The National President of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS), Prof. Damascus Tuurosong, has emphasized that top grades achieved by Public Junior High Schools in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are predominantly from students who initially attended private schools.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra, he noted that the 30% placement priority for Senior High School admissions granted to public schools has led many students transfers from private to public schools in pursuit of this advantage when they get to grade 8.
Prof. Tuurosong explained that this policy negatively impacts students, teachers, and parents in private schools, as many students are compelled to switch to public schools to secure priority placements in Category A Senior High Schools. He urged the government to focus on improving support for students across all schools, if it truly seeks to see good results.
He argued that the top achievements often celebrated by the Ministry are largely due to students who transferred from private to public schools.
