On this day 26 March 1995 (Exactly 24 years ago) Obuasi Goldfields (now Ashantigold FC) inflicted total humiliation on National Port Authority Anchors (N. P. A. Anchors) of Liberia with a brutal 8- 1 victory in a CAF Champions’ Cup first round second leg match played at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium .

Kofi Deblah scored four goals, Eben Hagan hit three successful strikes, with Kwabena Boateng also on the score sheet.

The 1995 Ghana Premier League top scorer , Kofi Deblah scored three goals in six minutes ( 22, 24, 28) and added another (76).

The Liberians substituted their goalkeeper Latec Johnson in the first half after he had conceded six goals from the 7th minute to the 42nd minute. Anchors pulled a goal back through substitute Emmanuel Horton, but Debrah and Hagan completed the rout in the last 14 minutes of play.

To date, this remains the most goals scored by a Ghanaian club in a single CAF Inter Club Competition match , but the biggest winning margin of 7 goals in a single match was equalled by Asante Kotoko when they defeated Sony Ela Nguema of Equatorial Guinea 7-0 in 2013.

On this day 26 March 1973 ( Exactly 46 years ago) Future Australia National Boxing Hall of Famer, Hector Thompson beat Joe Tetteh of Ghana at the Festival Hall, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia for the Commonwealth (British Empire) Super Lightweight title.

Hector Thompson, was Australasian Lightweight Champion and needed this victory to seal his chance for a World Championship bout.

The British -Commonwealth Champion was Joseph Tetteh.

The 31 year-old- Joe Tetteh with a record of 45-23-5 (25 KO’s) was ranked
as the #5 Light-Welterweight by Ring Magazine.

The ‘boys’ also fought back in June 1972, where Hector Thomspon won a ‘close’
10-Round Decision.

The Fight

Hector Thompson, using younger legs, boxed circles around the ‘veteran’
Joe Tetteh over the early rounds , to build up a ‘solid’ points lead. Hector
bounced solid left jabs into the mid-section of the muscular British-Commonwealth Champion, preventing Tetteh from landing his powerful right-hand hooks.

Tetteh (living in Scotland), did score with an occassional left hand, but could not get his hard right through the tight defense of the Australian.

Thompson, shook the rock-jawed Tetteh in Round 8 with a left-hook and right
uppercut, forcing the Champion to hold on.
The Ghanaian was the aggressor in Rounds 10, 11 and 12, as he was able to back the ‘quick footed’ Australian up, by landing the heavier punches.

But, the Australian fought cleverly over the last ‘3-Rounds’, as he jabbed his way inside, and then out-worked the Champion with quick combinations, before backing way unharmed.

Referee, Terry Reilly scored the bout with Hector Thompson having a 4-Point advantage.

Norton was able to continue the fight, but Foreman continued his attack and quickly sent Norton back down with a left hand to the head. Norton would again get back up and continue but was once again attacked by Foreman who put Norton flat on his back with another combination. Norton would get back up, but the referee decided to call the fight and Foreman was awarded with the victory at exactly two minutes of the second round.

On this day 26 March 1992 (Exactly 27 years ago) Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight boxing champion, was sentenced to six years in prison for raping a teenage beauty contestant,
Desiree Washington, his protests of innocence rejected by a judge who said she believes he could rape again.

Tyson sentenced to 10 years in prison

Superior Court Judge Patricia J. Gifford sentenced Tyson to 10 years apiece for one count of rape and two counts of criminal deviate conduct, then suspended four years from each term, which will run concurrently. This means that even with time deducted for good behavior, he will serve a minimum of two to three years in an Indiana state prison.
“Something needs to be done about the attitude you displayed here,” Gifford said.

Tyson, who was also denied bail pending his appeal, showed no emotion at the sentencing, removing his watch and handing it to one of his attorneys, Vincent Fuller. Then he kissed his 81-year-old foster mother, Camille Ewald, goodbye.

He was taken to the police wing on the fifth floor of the Marion County Courthouse for preliminary processing, then was driven to the Indiana Regional Diagnostic Center at Plainfield, Ind., 17 miles west of Indianapolis. There, Tyson went through orientation for a period of several weeks before being assigned to a prison by the state’s Department of Corrections.

Gifford also sentenced Tyson to a four-year probation period after his release from prison and fined him $10,000 for each of the three counts. She rejected a motion by prosecutors to fine Tyson an additional $150,047, to recover the cost of the trial.

Tyson’s legal team lost twice in separate pleas to Gifford. First, chief counsel Fuller asked the judge to allow Tyson to serve his sentence at an Indianapolis halfway house, the Riverside Community Corrections Corp. Second, the legal team asked her to allow the boxer to remain free on bond while awaiting the outcome of his appeal.
She refused bond, saying directly to Tyson: “I am going to deny your petition for bail, owing to the seriousness of the crime. As to whether you are at risk to commit a crime again, quite honestly I feel you are.”
