On this day 24 February 1974 (Exactly 45 years ago) The Ghana Football League season started with the two most successful clubs, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak losing their opening matches. Kotoko lost to Cape Coast Mysterious Dwarfs through a Robert Koufie strike, Hearts lost to Bofoakwa Tano at Sunyani through Dan Owusu’s overhead kick.

On this day 24 February 2007 (Exactly 12 years ago) Former World champion track and field athlete Marion Jones (31) weds Olympic bronze medalist Obadele Thompson (30) at the Union Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wilson’s Mills, North Carolina.

On this day 24 February 1993 (Exactly 26 years ago) England’s 1966 FIFA World Cup winning captain, Bobby Moore died at 6.36am at the age of 51.

He was the first member of the England World Cup winning side to die, the second being Alan Ball 14 years later. Moore was also outlived by the trainer of the side, Harold Shepherdson, who died in September 1995, and the manager of the side, Alf Ramsey, who died in April 1999. Ray Wilson died in May 2018, as did Gordon Banks in February 2019. Bobby Moore’s funeral was held on 2 March 1993 at Putney Vale crematorium and his ashes were buried in a plot at City of London Cemetery and Crematorium with his father, Robert Edward Moore (who died in 1978) and his mother, Doris Joyce Moore, who had died only the previous year.
