Today In Sports History: Black Queens suffer humiliating 11 – 0 defeat to Germany

On this day 22 July 2016 (Exactly 3 years ago) Ghana’s Black Queens were annihilated 11-0 by Germany in a friendly match played in Paderborn.

The Queens conceded in the first minute of play as Anja Mittag pulled a fast one on the defenders.

Mittag ended up scoring four goals in the demotion exercise.

By the half hour mark, the Queens were down six-nil with other goals from Dzenifer Marozsan, Alexandra Popp, a Cynthia Adobea own goal, Saskia Bartusiak and Sara Daebritz.

A hat-trick from Mittag gave the Germans a 9-0 lead at half time.

After the break, goals from Mandy Islacker (66th) and Dzenifer Marozsan (90 +1) sealed the heavy win.

On this day 22 July 2017 (Exactly 2 years ago) Isaac Dogboe successfully defended his WBO International super bantamweight belt with a sixth-round technical knock out over Javier Chacon from Argentina.

Fighting before a packed crowd at the Bukom Bukom Boxing Arena, with the world-acclaimed top referee in the center, Dogboe the Royal Storm was highly inspired and boxed his way to victory in grand style to the admiration of the fans and even the opponent’s corner.

Dogboe who represented Ghana at the 2012 Olympic Games in London exploded from the first round turned in his career-best, battering Chacon until the Argentinean refused to come out of his corner at the start of the seventh.

Team Chacon claimed a hand injury, but it appeared as if each of his body parts hurt after the one-sided pasting. Dogboe promised to defend his WBO International super bantamweight belt in impressive fashion. He took charge from the opening bell, unloading a variety of power punches to his slower foe’s head and ribs.

Chacon proved his toughness, but his stubbornness could not pass round seven. The then 36-year-old, two-time world title challenger had little to offer in return. The sixth was particularly brutal and after a minute-long conversation, Chacon wisely bowed out.

Among the dignitaries who watched the fight live was former president of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings. Dogbe said that his victory would not have been possible had it not been God and also the support of Ghanaians thus dedicated the victory to God and all Ghanaians.

“I want to thank everyone who came here to support me. Chacon is a very intriguing boxer with great movement but I kept my focus. There were moments where I felt I could knock him out but I had to be cautious. I have to thank him for coming down here to fight me but God was on my side. Everything that I have achieved is because of God and I dedicated this victory to him”, the visibly excited Dogboe expressed.

On this day 22 July 1963 (Exactly 56 years ago) Sonny Liston defended his Heavyweight boxing title after beating Floyd Patterson in round one for the second time.

Patterson and Liston had a rematch clause in their contract. Patterson wanted a chance to redeem himself, so they had a rematch on July 22, 1963, in Las Vegas. Patterson, a 4-1 betting underdog, was knocked down three times and counted out at 2:10 of the first round.

The fight lasted four seconds longer than the first one.Liston’s victory was loudly booed. “The public is not with me. I know it”, Liston said afterward. “But they’ll have to swing along until somebody comes to beat me.
