The body of a three-year-old girl who went missing in Sefwi Akuraa, a farming community in Amenfi West in the Western Region, has been discovered floating in an illegal mining pit (galamsey) on Sunday afternoon, three days after she went missing.
According to Maame Yaa, the mother of the little girl, she was with her daughter in their room last Friday but stepped out to buy watermelon.
Upon returning, she noticed her daughter was not in the room but later found her happily playing with other children nearby.
She left her there but when she returned later, the girl was nowhere to be found.
After hours of searching, community elders were notified, and a search team was organized to search the entire area.
The Unit Committee Chairman, Oscar Boafo stated that they had previously requested illegal miners to cover that particular pit, but the machine they initially brought wasnt fit for purpose.
They had to return it and wait for a more suitable machine, which has still not arrived.
He said following this tragic incident, they have now called for an excavator to fill the pit, emphasizing the urgency to prevent future tragedies.
Boafo highlighted challenges in the community, including the absence of a chief which makes people do what they want in the community without fear of being punished.
