Global police body Interpol has arrested thirty-seven suspected terrorists, including members believed to be linked to the Islamic State, across East Africa.
The France-based law enforcement body, in a report released on Monday, revealed that the operation was conducted over the past two months in collaboration with pan-African law enforcement agency Afripol.
Reports indicate the arrests come amid growing concerns over a possible resurgence of the ISIS militant group following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
Suspected ISIS terrorists were arrested in Kenya, while a suspected member of ISIS Mozambique was apprehended in Tanzania. Others were arrested in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia.
“East Africa’s complex landscape, marked by political instability, porous borders, and socioeconomic challenges, continues to provide an environment conducive to terrorist activity,” said Cyril Gout from Interpol.
“These positive results demonstrate the power of international collaboration in the fight against terrorism,” he added.
