National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2020 Parliamentary candidate for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, Alexander Ackuacku has said that Ghana’s media fraternity lacks unity.
The NDC communicator’s assertion was made on account of the existing contention between the National Media Commission (NMC) and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) regarding the safety of journalists.
In an interview on Happy 98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show with host, Bismark Brown, Alexander Ackuacku explained that the media is undeniably essential for national development. He believed that all bodies responsible for the protection of the media must do so with a unified aim of preserving the authenticity and effectiveness of the media space. “Freedom of the media is very important, because the media is where we can all express our views; we need the press and all of us are within the space therefore we need to make sure that all that we do makes that space safe for all of us.” He said
The NDC parliamentary candidate urged the GJA and the NMC to abort the public display of disunity and arrive at a consensus on how the the Media and journalists can be protected. “The Chairman of the NMC and the President of the GJA must deliberate on the matter behind closed doors until they arrive at am amicable understanding; they should look for how the NMC can collaborate with the GJA to protect the journalists which in turn protects the media fraternity.”
