A member of the communication and legal teams of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, is of the opinion that the Preisdent of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo cannot be faulted for canceling the December 17 referendum.

According to him when it comes to the law, there are various principles but the one applicable here is the principle that states that, “The power to do something includes the power to undo the same thing.”

Speaking on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ with Kwame Afrifa Mensah he noted that the President sent the bill to Parliament through the Attorney General or the Local Government Minister who was acting on his behalf and as such he can withdraw the bill.

But when asked if the President has breached any law by cancelling the referendum, the Lawyer replied that “It is not as simple as that”

Some political actors and social commentators have been calling for the prosecution and removal of the President after he announced the withdrawal of the December 17 Referendum stating it is to allow time for further consultations with key stakeholders and the public in general on Sunday.

Up until its cancellation, the referendum sought to amend the law to enable Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and unit committee members to be elected along political party lines.
