Member of National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Team, Nana Owusu Banahene says the Ministry for Gender, Children and Social Protection has become a white elephant under the leadership of its Minister, Sarah Adwoa Safo.
He alleged that the Minister has practically done nothing at the ministry which is a critical one in Ghana and to make matters worse, she has taken an indefinite period of time away from work.
He alleged that a misunderstanding between the Minister and the Coordinator for the School Feeding Programme is what has forced her (Adwoa Safo) to decide to stay away from her official duties. “She is home and decided not to return to work because of her ego. We all know she fired the Coordinator of the School Feeding Programme only for Adwoa Safo to be forced by the powers that be to re-appoint her. She’s throwing a tantrum because of this.”
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection reinstated Gertrude Quashigah as the National Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme after firing her.
A statement signed by the sector Minister, Sarah Adwoa Safo, indicated that the earlier dismissal of Mrs Quashigah was due to an “administrative error”.
Meanwhile, rumours had it that the reversal was strictly based on a directive by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
On his accord, this kind of governance is not proper. In an interview with Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show, he noted, “the minister has abandoned her post and work at the ministry has stalled. But surprisingly, the President cannot fire her.”
Questioning the professionalism of Adwoa Safo, he described her as incompetent with a poor track record as a former Minister of State in charge of Government Procurement. “Is she the only person for the job? She is not even competent and her actions prove that. She should know that the ministry is not for her father and should stop acting like that.”
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended the leave of Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo.
The message contained in a press statement from the office of the Presidency indicated that the Gender Minister who is also MP for Dome Kwabenya will not return to work until further notice.
The statement cited personal reasons by the Gender Minister.
“The President of the Republic Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended the leave of absence from office for the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo, MP for Dome Kwabenya which was to have ended on 31st August 2021. The Minister sought leave of absence for personal reasons,” the press statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin has said.
In the absence of Adwoa Safo, President Akufo-Addo has directed the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Hon. Cecilia Abena Dapaah to act as caretaker Minister for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
