Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam has suggested that the voting on the anti-gay bill presented to parliament be telecast live for all Ghanaians to witness this all-important event.
He notes that this will determine if the legislators really represented the people or they voted based on their whims and caprices.
Appearing on the special Editors’ Take edition of the Happy Morning Show, Andy stated: “I have discussed this with a member of the Constitutional and Legal Affair Committee of Parliament. I will also follow up with the Speaker. They have to give us a live telecast of the proceedings on the voting in parliament. Then, we can know which MP is for or against the bill”.
Andy Kankam, who is in support of the bill, shared that the nation through this bill has the opportunity to uphold values that sets its people from other people in other countries.
He, however, admitted that just like how some have called for the “fine-tuning” of the proposed bill, it is imperative that the bill be relooked at to avoid the situation where it becomes defective and then people cannot vote in favour of it.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021 was introduced into parliament earlier this year.
This bill is seeking to expand on the current law that provides up to three years in prison for same-sex activity.
The new bill when passed will prohibit and criminalize advocacy, funding and act of LGBTQ+ while promoting conversion therapy programs seeking to “convert” people from homosexuality to heterosexuality.
Meanwhile, a group of academics and lawyers have filled a memorandum challenging the anti-gay legislation submitted to Parliament.
In the memorandum, they contend that the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, which seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ and adjacent activities, is an “impermissible invasion of the inviolability of human dignity.”
Some Christian leaders, on the other hand, have submitted a memorandum to Parliament on the Proper Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, endorsing the bill.
