Tanzanian police have arrested officials of the country’s main opposition party CHADEMA ahead of a scheduled meeting which was organized by the party’s youth wing in BAVECHA in Mbeya.
News sources confirm that hundreds of the opposition supporters have been arrested as instructed by government, to maintain public order.
Latest reports indicate that the party’s vice chairman, Tundu Lissu, along with the party’s Secretary General John Mnyila were released earlier today and debunked claims of the meeting’s purposes to disrupt public order or cause any riots in an engagement with reporters.
CHADEMA has condemned the arrests and has demanded for the release of all those detained describing the arrests as politically motivated.
