Supreme Court orders parliament to remove James Quayson’s name from records

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that James Gyakye Quayson’s election as the Member of Parliament for Assin North was invalid and unconstitutional.

According to the seven-member panel chaired by Justice Jones Dotse, James Quayson’s election while he was a citizen of another nation is “inconsistent with and violates Article 94(2)(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana 1992.”

The court orders Parliament to expunge his name as MP from the records of Parliament.

Justice Jones Victor Dotse, Justice Nene Amegatcher, Justice Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, Justice Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Justice Yonny Kulendi and Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu declared that Mr Quayson was not qualified at the time he contested the election 2020.
