Some supporters of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen’s Movement for Change in the Central Region have defected to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the 2024 general elections approach.
At a press conference held in Cape Coast, over one hundred supporters announced their departure from the Movement for Change, citing the NPP’s extensive developmental projects across the country as a key reason for their decision.
This group, which previously backed Kyerematen during the presidential primaries, now believes that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has a better chance of winning the upcoming elections.
Francis Edzie, the leader of the group and now the polling station secretary for the NPP in the Twi-Ndzi-Twi Jejem Electoral Area in Cape Coast South, mentioned that they have responded to appeals from Bawumia’s national campaign team and are convinced that returning to the NPP serves the party’s interests.
The former campaign team members of Kyerematen, who initially followed him to the Movement for Change after he withdrew from the presidential primaries, are now committed to supporting the NPP. They emphasized the importance of continuity in governance, highlighting the numerous developmental initiatives undertaken by the NPP during its nearly eight years in power, and expressed their desire for the party to maintain its progress rather than supporting an opposition party that lacks direction.
