Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has stressed the important role the legislative Arm of government plays in promoting good governance.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Job 600 building in Accra, Mr. Bagbin reiterated that, Parliament House should not be taken for granted for its oversight functions.
“If the people are to benefit from democratic governance, it is the Parliament – which is the mirror of democracy that is the focus – that should be strengthened. Because, apart from law making, it is parliament that has the only function of oversight, and it is parliament that should ensure that our collective efforts in terms of energy, in terms of resources, in terms of trust, is appropriately applied to the benefit of everyone”.
According to him, Parliament represents the principles of collective efforts, as it needs the involvement of every individual. “Strengthening Parliament is the duty of everyone”.
Mr. Bagbin indicated that, parliament focuses on doing the will of the people. “What we do here is toward focusing to make sure that, the will of the people which, is reposed in parliament is not misapplied, abused or taken for granted but is used to the benefit of all”.
He charged Ghanaians to rally behind the work that parliament does and also have faith in them.
