The Executive Director of the Institute of Community Sustainability (ICS), Eric Jerry Aidoo, has expressed deep concern over Ghanaian politicians promoting betting as a solution to unemployment.
He warns that this approach is not only misguided but also potentially harmful, as betting can lead to dangerous addiction, resulting in severe consequences like theft, imprisonment, and violence.
Mr Aidoo notes that many European countries recognize the risks associated with betting and impose high taxes, up to 30%, to deter citizens from engaging in this activity. He added that Ghana’s mental health facilities are ill-equipped to handle the potential fallout of betting addiction.
ICS is therefore urging politicians to strongly discourage betting in political campaigns and instead prioritize sustainable solutions to unemployment. Aidoo advises policymakers to consider the disadvantages of betting and support initiatives that promote economic growth, development, and community well-being.
