The Electoral Commission (EC) has moved to allay fears and reassure the public that the integrity of the upcoming 2024 general elections remains uncompromised, following the recent theft of a biometric verification device (BVD).
This assurance comes on the heels of the arrest of a suspect in Nsawam on Friday, August 23, who was found in possession of the stolen device. The EC’s statement aims to calm concerns and maintain public trust in the electoral process, ensuring that the incident does not undermine the credibility of the elections.
The Electoral Commission’s (EC) Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey has released a statement dated August 24 addressing concerns over the stolen biometric verification device (BVD). Tettey emphasized that the BVDs are specifically designed for voter verification purposes only and do not possess the capability to compromise the electoral process.
He further explained that the devices require a unique activation code and additional security protocols to function fully, ensuring their integrity. The EC has initiated an internal investigation into the matter and will collaborate closely with law enforcement to resolve the issue and prevent future incidents.
