Spintex Knights call for G’ovt support after historic BAL Elite 16 stage Qualification

Dr. Eric Opoku, Co-founder of Spintex Knights Sporting Club, has expressed disappointment over the lack of support the team has received from the Ghanaian government, despite their historic achievement of qualifying for the Elite 16 stage of the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

In a press conference today,he revealed, “The Basketball Federation wrote letters for visa waivers for us, but we did not hear anything from the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” he stated. “We had no support from them.”

The Knights have made history as Ghana’s sole representative in the BAL, becoming the first Ghanaian team to reach the Elite 16 stage, a significant milestone for the nation’s basketball scene.

They secured their spot by finishing second in Group F during the qualifying tournament in Libya, and they are set to compete against 15 other teams from across Africa for a coveted place in the main BAL competition, scheduled for November 5 to 10 in Côte d’Ivoire.

Despite their impressive achievement, the Knights’ journey has been marked by challenges. Dr. Opoku shared his pride in representing Ghana, stating, “Going out with the national anthem, we wear our pride on our sleeves. But it’s very unfortunate that such a talented and confident team has not received the support it deserves. I hope we will have better backing moving forward.”

Head coach Serlorm Thomas echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the team’s commitment to qualifying for the main BAL competition. He expressed excitement about learning from legendary Ghanaian coaches and contributing to the nation’s basketball history, mentioning plans to enhance the team ahead of the Elite 16 stage.

Captain Elvis Pobi Siaw expressed confidence in his team’s readiness to qualify for the main BAL competition, emphasizing their rigorous preparations.

As the Knights prepare for the Elite 16 stage, their success has not only brought joy to Ghanaian basketball fans but has also highlighted the need for increased government support for the sport. With the team’s determination and talent, coupled with the necessary backing, Ghana’s basketball scene could be poised for even greater achievements in the future.
