Speaker's ruling is legally and constitutionally wrong - KT Hammond

The Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa Constituency, Kobina Tahir Hammond has described the recent decision of the speaker of parliament to declare four seats vacant as constitutionally wrong.

According to him, the decision of the speaker will have a ripple effect on parliamentary business and create more disruption in Parliament.

He added that, once the NPP side has been considered as the minority, they will boycott parliamentary proceedings and it will halt government business.

“We think it’s very wrong, and there are provisions that he is alluded to but as far as we are concerned, the import of those provisions is not what he has articulated”, he stated.

“The speaker is constitutionally and legally wrong. This issue is a clear matter of interpretation and therefore the speaker should have allowed the supreme Court to sit on the matter”.

His comment comes after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin declared four Parliamentary seats vacant.

The members of Parliament whose seats were declared vacant include Peter Yaw Kwaakye Ackah of Amenfi Central Constituency, Andrew Amoako Asiama of Fomena, Kojo Asante, MP for Suhum and Cynthia Morrison, MP for Agona West Constituency.
