SONA 2024: Minority MPs threaten to boycott Prez. Akufo Addo's address

Minority members of Parliament are threatening to boycott Nana Akufo-Addo’s 2024 State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, citing several grievances.

The empty seats on the opposition side of the chamber marked a stark contrast to the usually full house during such addresses.

According to Happyghana.com, the Minority MPs are demanding an apology from the Bank of Ghana Governor for alleged disparaging remarks and are protesting President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to sign into law three bills they passed in 2023.

Despite their absence, efforts are underway to resolve the impasse. The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, is reportedly working to convince the Minority MPs to return to the chamber.

Meanwhile, Haruna Iddrisu, opposition MP for Tamale South Constituency has taken to his seat.

It remains to be seen whether the situation will be resolved before President Akufo-Addo delivers his address.
