President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio has called out the United Nations to consider Africa’s presence with more seats in the U.N council.
Chairing a meeting that his country convened, President Julius Maada Bio pressed a longstanding bid for African countries to get more council seats, including two permanent and potentially veto-wielding spots.
According to reports, Bio stated that Africa has been patient for too long. He added that Africa has been striving to also be heard and should be part of decisions that will involve Africa one way or the other. “After decades of seeking a bigger voice in the United Nations ‘ most powerful body, Africa “cannot wait any longer,”
“The time for half-measures and incremental progress is over. Africa must be heard, and its demands for justice and equity must bemet,” Bio said, calling his continent the “unquestionable victim” of an imbalanced, outdated and unrepresentative Security Council structure.
This request aligns with broader efforts by African leaders to seek greater representation and influence in global decision-making bodies, reflecting the continent’s growing importance and its need for more equitable participation in international affairs.
