The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of six individuals, including four juvenile PRESEC Legon students, for allegedly staging the kidnapping of a fellow student.
According to a press release dated April 5, the police investigation revealed that the “kidnapping” was an elaborate ploy by the student to extort money from his own parents.
The statement explains that the young boy had planned to travel abroad with the ransom money and conspired with the other suspects, including two adults, to carry out the fake abduction.
The suspects, identified as Isaac Kissi Adjei alias Kofi Black and Courage Teiko alias Timmy, along with the four juveniles, are all PRESEC Legon students.
“In the process, they demanded an amount of Three Hundred and Forty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵340,000.00) as ransom from the alleged victim’s parents,” the police statement read.
Shockingly, the group managed to collect 20,000 Ghana Cedis from the victim’s parents before the authorities intervened.
“The Investigation further disclosed that the juveniles together with the two others succeeded in collecting an amount of Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵20,000.00) of the total ransom demanded,” the police added.
The brazen scheme has left the community and parents in disbelief, as the police continue their investigation into the matter. The arrested individuals are currently in custody and the authorities have assured that the parents and guardians of the students involved have been informed.
