An audacious theft attempt was foiled at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital as the claimed perpetrator was successfully captured.
The incident which occurred in the surgical ward, shocked everyone in the medical centre and brought attention to the need for more potent security measures.
Eyewitnesses on the scene described the brazen attempt to steal personal belongings from patients and their visitors. One witness, who was present during the incident, provided an account of the events that unfolded.
“We were all here at the surgical ward when an old lady entered, pretending to be a relative to a patient. Most of the patients were asleep, and some visitors were beside their loved ones. The lady went closer to a bed and discreetly took a phone from a lady’s bag. She then moved swiftly to the next bed and repeated the act,” the eyewitness recounted.
“What raised our suspicions was the unreal speed at which she tried to exit the patient area. That’s when the nurses and other individuals in the ward rushed to catch up with her.”
The incident left many in shock, given that there were supposed to be security personnel stationed at the hospital. The eyewitness expressed concern about the security lapse, saying, “The strange thing is that there were two security personnel at post, and what they should have done was to inquire about the name of the relative and the bed number before allowing entry. If not, such incidents will continue.”
Authorities at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital have promised to investigate the security lapse and review the current security protocols to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
The alleged suspect, the elderly woman, is now in police custody and is expected to face charges related to theft and trespassing.
