Security expert, Col Festus Aboagye (rtd), has recommended highway and urban patrolling by the police to curb robbery incidents in the country.
He made this recommendation following a robbery attack and murder of the Mfantseman Member of Parliament, Ekow Kwansah Hayford.
Speaking in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he reasoned that robbery is on the high because of low police visibility and as such, people are always aware of the fixed police checkpoint.
Suggesting what can be done about this situation, he stated: “The police need highway patrols because robbers won’t rob at or near police checkpoints where they know they will definitely be busted. That is why they operate in places where there are no policemen.
So the police need highway and urban patrols. Just like in London, in times past, when a certain IGP introduced bicycles for policemen to use in urban areas. Some also use motorcycles. Others use helicopters but we can use drones. In some places, horses are used. That is the conversation we need to be having.
I believe that all that is happening is as a result of the lack of resources in police crime intelligence and capacity”.
The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, Mr Ekow Kwansah Hayford was shot dead by unknown assailants while returning from a campaign tour on the Nkusukum Mankessim-Abeadze Duadze road in the Central Region at about 1am on Friday, October,9,2020.
