Parliament has approved two ministerial nominees appointed by President John Dramani Mahama.
Samuel Nartey George as Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovations and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as Minister for Foreign Affairs through a majority consensus.
The Minority in Parliament, led by Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, skipped the approval process during the plenary session on Tuesday night, February 4, 2025.
The minority initially planned to demand a secret ballot, raising concerns over Samuel George’s social media posts criticizing the Chief Justice and former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as well as his conduct during the vetting process.
Similarly, they opposed Mr. Ablakwa’s nomination, citing his failure to provide the Appointments Committee with documents related to his rental agreement and his involvement in the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
However, Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin explained that their decision to abstain was influenced by calls for restrictions, prompting them to step back to prevent further controversy.
