Residents of Asylum Down express worry over rainy season

Residents of Asylum Down in the Korley Klottey municipality of the Greater Accra Region have expressed their fears due to the absence of measures to prevent floods as the rainy season sets in.

Some residents of Asylum Down, one of Accra’s flood prone areas, have lamented woefully due to the havoc and the loss of property that occurs every year due to flooding. “Refuse and filth which comes from the Ring Road area and even all the way from Nima is brought to this end. When that happens there’s no way created for the water to move, and it now goes into our homes and stores and destroys a lot.” residents said.

They metioned in an interview with e.TV Ghana’s Kobina Baidoo that the floods usually occur within their vicinity as a result of the poor disposal of waste into area gutters which have been seemingly narrowed from all parts of Accra to the area, hence the floods.

The locals noted that efforts to expand the drainage system have been futile due to lack of support from government. “At the beginning of the year(2023) we were told that we needed to evacuate for a demolishing exercise to be undertaken for the restructuring of the gutter; our names and numbers were collected and our homes were marked as places that would have to be broken down but we have not heard anything from them till now.”
