Remove Dominic Nitiwul as Defense Minister

Member of Parliament for Obom Domeabra Sophia Karen Edem Ackuaku has demanded the immediate dismissal of Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul.

The move comes in response to what she described as the Minister’s disgraceful actions and failure to address the tragic events that unfolded in the aftermath of the December 2020 elections.

The MP accuses Nitiwul of evading accountability for the alleged involvement of military personnel under his watch in a shocking incident in the Techiman South Constituency, Bono East Region.

According to Ackuaku, the military, under Nitiwul’s command, callously opened fire on a crowd, resulting in the death of two innocent individuals and the injury of six others.

Despite widespread calls for justice from victims’ families, civil society organizations, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ackuaku claims that the ruling government has turned a blind eye to these appeals. The Defense Minister, she asserts, now behaves as an untouchable figure, manipulating the Ghanaian Army for personal gain.

“Despite vehement pleas for justice from the victims’ families, civil society organizations, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), it seems that these appeals have fallen on the deliberately deaf ears of the ruling government.” she highlighted.

The statement also highlights a recent video where Nitiwul is seen threatening to subject a fellow Parliamentary Candidate aspirant, Alhaji Ahmed Zaruk Nuhu, to despicable treatment during the upcoming 2024 elections.

The Defense Minister’s supporters can be heard chanting “King of the Ghana Armed Force” in the background, further intensifying concerns about the potential abuse of power.

Sophia Ackuaku vehemently urges President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to strip Dominic Nitiwul of his ministerial position and demand a public apology to the Ghanaian people and the NDC. She warns that failure to take swift action will prompt the NDC to mobilize and ensure that the December 2024 elections remain free and fair.

“I unequivocally urge President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to promptly strip Dominic Nitiwul of his ministerial position, demanding a public apology to the Ghanaian people and the NDC. Should the President choose to neglect this imperative course of action, the NDC will mobilize to ensure the December 2024 elections remain free and fair!” she stated.

The news comes on the heels of a recent statement by Defense Minister Nitiwul, who, while seeking reelection in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries, openly declared his intention to use his contender, Alhaji Ahmed Nuhu Zaruk, to teach the NDC a lesson in the 2024 polls.

The Minority in Parliament, including MP Edwin Nil Lante Vanderpuye, has cautioned Nitiwul against using intimidation tactics during the elections, threatening a strong reaction from the opposition NDC if such tactics are employed.
