The General Secretary of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Jerry Owusu, has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama’s proposal to reintroduce the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ Bill, as a government-sponsored initiative instead of a private member’s bill.
During a meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference, Mr. Mahama suggested that the bill, which failed to receive presidential assent before the end of the previous Parliament, should be reintroduced as a government-backed bill to ensure broader support and consultation with relevant stakeholders.
In an interview with Bismark Brown, on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show, Mr. Owusu strongly rejected the suggestion, calling it “nonsense.” He argued that the Mahama administration should not entertain or discuss the bill, as doing so would only amplify its prominence and influence.
Mr. Owusu explained that while some individuals may exhibit behaviors traditionally associated with the opposite sex, they do not necessarily engage in homosexuality. He cautioned that continued discussions about the bill could inadvertently encourage curiosity and experimentation.
He cited that if the bill is dead with the previous government, any further discourse on the matter should cease, as such conversations only draw more attention to it.
