The J.J. Rawlings Foundation has petitioned Parliament to investigate remarks made on the floor of the House against the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his daughter, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.
On Tuesday, February 4, during parliamentary proceedings, an unidentified male voice was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”
In a letter dated February 4, 2025, and addressed to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, the foundation described the comments made during proceedings on January 4 as false and offensive.
Signed by Executive Director Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, the petition calls for a parliamentary inquiry and a retraction.
The foundation argues that the remarks unfairly tarnish the legacy of Ghana’s first president of the Fourth Republic and attempt to discredit Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings’ work as a three-term opposition MP for Klottey Korle.
It urged Parliament to safeguard the dignity of past leaders and maintain respectful discourse in the House.
The petition also outlined former President Rawlings’ pivotal role in guiding Ghana through political and economic challenges from his leadership in 1979 through the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era and into the Fourth Republic while warning against efforts to distort his contributions.
