Members of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) are set to begin an indefinite strike today, October 21, 2024.
This action follows the government’s failure to address their demands for institution-specific allowances despite multiple attempts to find a resolution.
The PSWU has expressed frustration over the government’s refusal to honor these allowances, which they argue has exacerbated the financial strain on public service workers.
The union is advocating for the implementation of allowances that account for the unique challenges faced by its members in various institutions.
In anticipation of the upcoming strike, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has urged the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) to reconsider its decision, stating that the strike would disrupt ongoing negotiations and hinder further discussions.
FWSC emphasized that meaningful negotiations are difficult if the union moves forward with industrial action.
PSWU has expressed concern over the government’s delayed implementation of recommendations from a nine-member committee appointed in 2022 to review the Single Spine Pay Policy (SSPP), which aimed to address compensation challenges in the public sector.
FWSC reiterated its commitment to negotiations but warned that progress would be stalled if the strike goes ahead.
