Communication Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Owusu Banahene, has called for the arraignment of the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Attah, after the latter hinted of the possible reintroduction of the road tolls.
The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, during the presentation of the 2022 budget proposed the cessation of collection of road tolls in the country.
The Minister said although the government needs to such revenue to fix roads in the country, it has observed that toll booths are doing more harm than good, causing heavy traffic and impacting negatively on productivity.
“To address these challenges, the government has abolished all tolls on public roads and bridges. This takes effect immediately after the budget is approved,” the Finance Minister said.
Following the announcement, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta issued a directive for the collection of tolls on public roads to be immediately stopped, when the proposal was yet to be approved by Parliament.
Reacting to the recent statement of the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta on the possible reintroduction of road tolls, Mr. Banahene in a panel discussion on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show said, “Amoako-Atta should be charged for causing financial loss to the state with his decision to close down toll booths and leading the country to lose a lot of money. Now he wants to reopen them and if that happens, he should be prosecuted for all the money lost within the period which toll booths were closed.”
he hinted that the NDC will see to his prosecution when they regain power if the ruling government does not do so.
The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Attah, has said the exigencies of the situation on grounds in future will determine if road tolls will be reintroduced.
He made this known at a town hall meeting on e-levy in Koforidua on Thursday, January 27, 2022.
