Prof. Opoku-Agyemang criticizes president Akufo-Addo over self-honoring statue

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for erecting a statue of himself at the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital. She argued that this is not an appropriate priority, especially given the current challenges facing Ghanaians.

Speaking to the people of Walewale as part of her Northern Regional campaign tour, she stated that if any president deserved to be honored with such a gesture, it would have been the late Jerry John Rawlings, John Atta Mills, or John Mahama who in her view, performed exceptionally well during their time in office. She questioned the timing and necessity of the statue, particularly in light of what she described as President Akufo-Addo’s underperformance.

“And here i think of the late J.J Rawlings, Atta Mills and my own John Mahama. I doubt if any of them would have thought that the most important thing to do at this time is to go and unveil statues of themselves”, she said.

She further urged Ghanaians to recognize the crises the country is facing and support a leadership focused on solutions, rather than self-aggrandizement. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called on the public to rally behind John Mahama and the NDC for victory in the 2024 elections.
