President John Dramani Mahama has established an eight-member committee to organize the National Education Forum, fulfilling his campaign pledge to advance Ghana’s education sector.
During his 2024 election campaign, President Mahama promised to hold a national forum to gather public input on improving the education sector, particularly the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
The committee, chaired by former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor George K. T. Oduro, has been given two weeks to submit its report and plan. Other members include Professor Goski Alabi, Professor Rosemary Bosu, Dr. Samuel Awuku, and Professor Smile Dzisi, Kofi Asare, Stephen Owusu, and Inusah Shiraz.
A statement issued by the Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, noted that as part of its Terms of Reference (TOR), the committee is responsible for developing a guiding theme for the forum and identifying key stakeholders across the education sector. It will also propose an agenda with time allocations, select a suitable venue and date, and establish a secretariat to coordinate activities. Additionally, the committee is tasked with preparing a budget for the forum and compiling a comprehensive report on its findings and recommendations.
Within three weeks of the forum’s conclusion, the committee is expected to present a draft national education policy framework and an action plan for implementing reforms.
