President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghana’s international partners to maintain and even strengthen their cooperation with the country, despite the recent suspension of assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
During a visit by UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, President Mahama stressed the critical role of international support as Ghana navigates economic challenges, particularly its exclusion from the international credit market.
He emphasized the need for fiscal prudence and strategic investment to drive economic growth and job creation, especially for the country’s youthful population.
He noted that one of the key issues that dominated the recent elections was unemployment, making it imperative to attract more investments to spur job creation.
Acknowledging the unpredictable nature of global relations, he pointed out that Ghana must make adjustments to its budget to account for the $156 million shortfall resulting from the USAID freeze.
However, he expressed optimism that international partners would continue their collaboration or even enhance their support to ensure assistance reaches the country’s most vulnerable citizens.
