Three persons have been confirmed dead with four others injured after a confrontation between police and suspects who were believed to have stolen some gold from the Newmont mining site at Notroso in the Ahafo Region.
According to a statement by the police, during the operation to restore calm at the Newmont mining site by three (3) of the suspects died.
The statement by the police indicates that, calm has been restored in the area.
The statement mentioned that, “the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, worked on the phone with the Regional Police team to engage community leaders and the youth throughout the night till the morning of Thursday 9th Janie 2025 to stabilize the situation and there have been no reprisal attacks or escalation of the situation in the community”.
The Police further indicated that, a special investigation team from Accra has been tasked to investigate the incident while a reinforcement team has been assigned to the area
“A special investigation team from Accra has been sent to the area to investigate the incident whilst a reinforcement team has also been sent to the community to help ensure that there is peace, security, law and order”.
“The Police have received information that the three deceased victims are Muslims, and the due process of the law is being followed for the bodies to be released to their families for burial later today”, the statement added.
The police has called on the general public to remain calm as they continue to pursue their mandate.
“We urge the public to remain calm as the Police continue to work to ensure law and order prevail”.
